PCLinuxOS support dropped

PCLinuxOS support for building PlexyDesk packages is being discontinued now.

The latest PlexyDesk version as of Aug 2011 is known to be build and work on this distro with no problems. But later PlexyDesk versions will be neighter tested nor be amended to fit this distro.

The reason that PlexyDesk had support for this distribution was that our previous project KBFX had two users of this distribution, so back in that time we decided to add support for it. Because of this we decided to add support in PlexyDesk too, but it turned out our efforts are a kind of useless...

So there are a plenty of reasons for the discontinued support of pclos decision:

  1. The packaging system of the distro is an RPM one, but it has been amended too much and has several code insufficiencies and is not actually fitted to be used by an ordinary user. The efforts it takes to support that do not worth the distro's low index of popularity.
  2. The distro is a too close derivative of Mandriva, so practically it is better to spare the time supporting the distro's broken packaging system and use the efforts in better support for Mandriva instead. That of course means you may use Mandriva's rpms of PlexyDesk and probably they will work perfectly.
  3. Practically there is no sufficient documentation on basic things like what the amendments to the basic system and the packaging system are, any specifications etc.
  4. No bug tracking support or whatever like this.
  5. The actual upstream support is too creepy as is their attitude towards criticism and offered solutions too. If you have problems with any part of the distro, at best you can get explanations of how stupid, lazy and incompetent you are.

So if you are a PCLinuxOS user and you like to have and use PlexyDesk, you have a couple of solutions(listed in the order of better to worse going down the list):

  1. Try to install the Mandriva rpms. This should work in most cases 'cause Mandriva usually uses old stable versions of the different libraries and stuff. And because PlexyDesk will support Mandriva that means your distro will be almost for sure capable of using the Mandi's RPMs.
  2. Try to alter the plexydesk.spec file (you can find it in the dist folder) in the sections aimed to your distro. It may help you build and use PlexyDesk.
  3. If the above two do not work, try building PlexyDesk from source without using your packaging system(please read the README file in the main PlexyDesk tree).
  4. Ask your pclos "gurus" or fanbois for help. They may include a Package of PlexyDesk in your repos, though i am almost sure they will not :)

Finally you always have the option to switch to a more popular (and meaning better supported) distribution like Mandriva, Ubuntu, Fedora etc etc...

Anyway if anyone wants to contribute code or specs to PlexyDesk for supporting the distro, we will be glad to include it... But that means you will be responsible for that specific code/spec in terms of updates, bug fixing, amendment etc... Do not expect any of us to help you with this ... sorry :)

NOTE from PhobosK: Maybe this decision has a very strong emotional element, but I do not intend to waste my time supporting a distribution whose developers accept that God speaks through them and that the world begins and ends with them :)... More on the topic here.
